Obverse description Within a beaded inner circle, the Virgin Mary (Theotokos) stands facing, nimbed and draped, presenting a crown to King Leo I, who stands to her right wearing a crown and royal regalia. The king is depicted in a slightly smaller scale in a gesture of reverence. An Armenian legend runs in the outer field between the beaded border and the serrated rim.

Reverse description Within a beaded inner circle, two rampant lions face one another heraldically, flanking a patriarchal cross at centre. Each lion is depicted with its head turned outward and raised forepaws resting near the cross shaft. An Armenian legend occupies the outer field, enclosed between the beaded inner border and the serrated rim.
