| Additional information |
Naser al-Din Shah ruled Iran for nearly fifty years, but the 1880s marked a period of particular financial strain — his administration had been selling concessions to Russian and British interests to cover chronic budget shortfalls, and the Iranian treasury was perpetually underfunded. The gold toman circulated alongside a badly debased silver coinage, making even small gold denominations practically significant in daily commerce.
