This coin commemorates the 1981 Soyuz 39 mission, which carried Jügderdemidiin Gürragchaa — the first Mongolian in space — aboard a Soviet spacecraft to the Salyut 6 station. Gürragchaa, a fighter pilot selected through the Soviet intercosmos program, spent just under eight days in orbit alongside Soviet cosmonaut Vladimir Dzhanibekov.
Mongolia issued several denominations marking the flight, all dated 1981. Gürragchaa later became Minister of Defence of Mongolia, serving from 2000 to 2004.
