Obverse description Four large Chữ Hán (Chinese) characters arranged in the traditional cash-coin quadrant layout surrounding a central square perforation. Reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left, the inscription reads 紹治通寶 (Thiệu Trị Thông Bảo), meaning 'Current treasure of Thiệu Trị.' The characters are rendered in bold, deeply incised relief against a flat field, exhibiting the classic calligraphic style of Vietnamese Nguyễn dynasty cast coinage.

Reverse description Central square perforation flanked by the two-character denomination inscription 一元 (nhất nguyên, 'one tien') positioned to the right and left of the hole. The upper field features a stylized cloud or ruyi motif in relief, while the lower field displays a prominent wave or ocean pattern rendered in layered, curvilinear relief — both decorative elements being characteristic of high-denomination gold Nguyễn dynasty coinage.
