William VIII came to the Brunswick throne in 1830 under pressure from the revolutionary wave sweeping Europe that year — his predecessor, Charles II, was so widely despised that his own palace was burned by a mob and he fled into exile. The 1851 issue falls within a duchy still navigating the constitutional settlement forced on the house of Welfen in the aftermath of that upheaval.
Brunswick's .750 fine thalers of this period were struck slightly below the Prussian convention standard, a persistent friction point in the German customs union years before unification rendered the question moot.
