| Obverse description | The field is dominated by a seven-line Latin commemorative inscription reading THORVNIA HOSTILITER OPPVGNATA ET DEI O AVXILIO FORTR A CIVIB DEFENSA XVI FEBR ANNO MDCXXIX, recording the hostile siege of Toruń and its valiant defense by its citizens with divine aid on 16 February 1629. Above the inscription, at the upper center of the field, the arms of Toruń are depicted within a decorative cartouche surmounted by an eagle displayed, flanked by foliate ornamental supporters. A scrollwork floral ornament decorates the lower field beneath the inscription. The overall design is executed in the robust relief characteristic of early seventeenth-century German-influenced hammered coinage. |
