The Kaliningrad Coin and Token Mint operates in what was, until 1946, the Prussian city of Königsberg — a detail that gives any token issue from this facility an odd historical undertow. The "Thaler" denomination here is purely notional, a nostalgic nod to the old Prussian monetary tradition with no legal tender status. Svetlogorsk, formerly Rauschen, was a Baltic resort town favored by German aristocracy before Soviet annexation and renaming in 1946.
