The "Three Emperors" designation refers to a remarkable dynastic convergence: Rudolf II issued this thaler during the period when three successive Holy Roman Emperors — Maximilian II, Rudolf himself, and the future Matthias — were all alive simultaneously, a circumstance that prompted commemorative and prestige issues from the Bohemian mints at Joachimsthal and Kutná Hora. Rudolf's court at Prague was at this moment the intellectual and artistic center of Europe, attracting alchemists, astronomers, and engravers in equal measure, which directly elevated the die-cutting quality on Bohemian thalers of the 1580s and 1590s above most contemporary Germanic issues.
Davenport EC II 3027A places this among the rarer die pairings of the type.
