| Obverse description | Draped bust of Duke August the Younger facing right, depicted with a short beard and wearing a ruffled collar, enclosed within a wreath border. The effigy is rendered in high relief in the characteristic hammered style of the mid-seventeenth century. A circular Latin legend surrounds the portrait, reading AUGUSTUS D. G. DUX BRUNS. ET LUN., identifying the ruler as Duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg by the grace of God. The reverse-facing orientation of the legend segments around the periphery reflects the distinctive layout of this 'Reisetaler' type. The field is relatively flat, with the bust occupying most of the available space within the inner wreath. |
