Obverse description Central field displays the complex heraldic achievement of Landgrave Philip of Hesse, comprising a vertically oriented crowned shield bearing the lion of Hesse flanked by additional armorial quarterings; to the left and right of the shield appear supporting figures including an eagle and a lion. The date numerals '6 4' appear divided across the upper field on either side of the central device. A continuous Latin circumscription reading PHILIPPVS D:G. LANDGRAVIVS HASSIÆ encircles the entire composition within a beaded border, rendered in the bold upright lettering characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century German taler coinage.

Reverse description Central field features a quartered heraldic shield enclosed within an ornate cartouche, displaying the arms of Hesse and associated territories including a crowned lion passant, a six-pointed star, a crescent, and an eagle, all rendered in the finely detailed style typical of sixteenth-century German hammered silver coinage. The shield is surrounded by elaborate foliate scrollwork. The circumscription, in bold upright Latin lettering within a beaded border, carries the German-language devotional motto WAS. GOT(T). BESCHERT. BLEIBET. VNERWERT, meaning 'What God bestows remains inviolate,' a pious legend frequently employed on Hessian taler coinage of this period.
