Obverse description Half-length armored effigy of Landgrave Philip of Hesse facing left, clad in full plate armor with detailed pauldrons and gorget, holding a sword or scepter upright in his right hand. The figure is rendered in high relief in the German Renaissance style, contained within a beaded inner circle. A Latin titulary legend surrounds the effigy in the outer field, reading clockwise from the top.
