| Reverse description | Within a beaded inner circle, Noah's Ark is depicted riding turbulent floodwaters, the vessel rendered in fine architectural detail with a ridged roof and timber hull surging above dramatically stylised waves that fill the lower portion of the field. Above the ark, a dove descends from the upper field carrying an olive branch in its beak, symbolising divine deliverance and hope for better times. A Latin legend arcs around the upper portion of the beaded border. The composition is executed in high relief with accomplished Baroque engraving, the waves in particular displaying vigorous curvilinear treatment characteristic of early seventeenth-century German die-cutting. |
