Louis Frederick inherited the County of Mömpelgard — the French-speaking Württemberg exclave known today as Montbéliard — in 1608 and spent much of his reign navigating the catastrophic opening years of the Thirty Years' War. This thaler was struck in 1628, the same year Imperial and Catholic League forces were pressing hard into Protestant German territories under the Edict of Restitution. For a small Lutheran enclave surrounded by hostile pressures, the ability to strike full-weight thalers carried genuine political weight.
Mömpelgard operated its own mint largely independent of the main Württemberg establishment at Stuttgart, which accounts for the distinct references under KR#524 alongside the Dav attribution.
