Obverse description Armored bust of Duke John II of Palatinate-Zweibrücken facing right, wearing elaborately decorated plate armor with ornamental shoulder pauldrons and a ruff collar. The effigy is rendered in high relief within a plain inner circle. The surrounding Latin legend, divided by the bust, reads IOHAN. D.G. CO. PAL. RHE. DVX. BA. IVL. CLI. ET. MON., identifying the ruler by name and titles. The portrait displays a short beard and close-cropped hair characteristic of early seventeenth-century German ruler effigies. A beaded outer border frames the entire design.
