Obverse description Armored bust of John Frederick I, Elector of Saxony, facing right, wearing a fur-trimmed mantle and armor, with a sword diagonally across the field. The circular legend in Latin reads IOHA FR ELE DVX SAX BVR MAGD Z, interrupted by three heraldic shields positioned at the top, right, and bottom of the inner circle, displaying the arms of Saxony, Thuringia, and related territories. The portrait is rendered in the robust late-Gothic hammered style characteristic of early sixteenth-century Saxon coinage.
