Additional information

John Frederick, Duke of Calenberg, converted to Catholicism in 1651 — a remarkable defection in a staunchly Lutheran territory — yet managed to retain his lands and rule until his death in 1679, the very year this thaler was struck. His reign saw Hanover elevated as his primary residence, laying groundwork for the city's later prominence under his successors. This coin dates to his final year; he died in December, making late-dated examples from this year potentially among the last produced under his authority.
