Obverse description A wild man (Wildman or Wilder Mann), the heraldic figure of Brunswick, depicted striding left, his body covered in foliage, holding an uprooted tree trunk in his right hand raised above his shoulder. The date 15-98 is divided by the figure's legs in the lower field. The encircling Latin legend reads along the inner border of the coin.

Reverse description Elaborate quartered coat of arms of Henry Julius, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, featuring a large central escutcheon with multiple quarterings, surmounted by three ornate crested helmets with elaborate mantling. The shield is flanked by supporters and the entire composition is richly detailed in the German Renaissance style. The motto legend HONESTUM PRO PATRIA (Honesty for the Fatherland) encircles the design.
