Additional information

Henry Julius ruled Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel from 1589 until his death in 1613, and this thaler was struck during a period when he was aggressively consolidating secular authority over the church territories within his principality — a process that brought him into direct conflict with the Protestant estates. He was also, unusually for a reigning prince, a practicing playwright, and his Brunswick court became one of the earliest centers of professional German theater. The coinage of his reign is consequently well-documented by collectors drawn to its administrative complexity.

Welter 637 is among the more consistently encountered varieties of the type, though die alignment varies noticeably across surviving examples.
