| Obverse description | Central field occupied by the heraldic achievement of the Livonian Order, consisting of a divided shield bearing the cross of the Teutonic Knights in the upper half and a quartered cross in the lower half, supported by decorative mantling. The shield is surmounted by a large cross fitchy with ornamental scrollwork to either side. The abbreviated legend GM · ZL appears in the upper portion of the rectangular inner frame, standing for Gotthard Magister Zu Livland (Gotthard, Master of Livonia). The date 1559 is inscribed at the base of the shield within the frame. The entire composition is contained within a plain rectangular border set against a broadly flat, unadorned field, characteristic of the hammered coinage of the period. |
