George I died on 11 June 1727 at Osnabrück, en route to Hanover — a journey he made annually and never completed that final time. This memorial thaler was struck by the Brunswick-Lüneburg-Calenberg-Hannover mint to mark a ruler who had, by that point, spent more of his reign in Britain than in his German territories. He had acceded to the British throne in 1714 under the Act of Settlement, leaving the administration of his Hanoverian lands largely to ministers.
Death thalers of this type are struck to a formula well-established in the German states by the early 18th century, but the political circumstances here are singular — no other German prince had simultaneously held a major European crown at death.
