| Reverse description | The reverse, like the obverse, is entirely filled with a multi-line Latin funerary inscription in raised roman capital lettering, recording the death and obsequies of Elisabeth Charlotte. The text states that she died at Crossen an der Oder in Silesia on 16 April 1660 at 9 o'clock in the evening, and records that her pious and obedient son, the Elector of Brandenburg Frederick William, designated by the monogram W, rendered her solemn and fitting funeral honors at Berlin (Colonia ad Spream) on 4 September 1660. The inscription concludes with the epitaph NON FVIT MORTALE QVOD OPTABAT DEFVNCTA, meaning 'What the deceased desired was not mortal.' A small decorative flower or quatrefoil ornament appears at the foot of the field. The overall composition reflects the elaborate commemorative tradition of Brandenburg-Prussia memorial coinage of the seventeenth century. |
