Frederick Ulrich ruled Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel from 1613 until his death in 1634, and the span of this issue reflects a reign defined less by governance than by catastrophe. He was widely regarded as an ineffective ruler, prone to court favorites and factional manipulation, and the Thirty Years' War consumed his territories with particular brutality — Swedish, Imperial, and League forces all moved through the duchy in succession. He died without legitimate heirs, extinguishing the Wolfenbüttel line of the House of Welf entirely.
Welter 1057A distinguishes this variety within a complex series of thalers produced across multiple mints and die cutters during the period.
