Obverse description Half-length armored effigy of Friedrich III (Frederick III, Elector Palatine) facing slightly right, his right hand resting a sword over his shoulder and his left hand holding an orb; the figure is rendered in detailed plate armor typical of the late Renaissance period. The legend surrounding the portrait contains the titles of Friedrich III in Latin, running along the outer border of the coin.

The circular legend MONETA. NO. RHEN. runs along the outer border, referencing the Rhenish monetary union (Rheinischer Münzverein), with additional titles and epithets completing the inscription.
