Obverse description Bearded bust of Elector Frederick III (the Wise) facing right, wearing a broad-brimmed hat and fur-trimmed mantle, rendered in the robust late-Gothic hammered style typical of early Saxon thalers. The effigy is set within a plain inner circle, with the motto legend VERBUM DOMINI MANET IN AETERNUM (The Word of the Lord Endures Forever) running in the annular band between the inner and outer circles. The outer legend carries the ruler's titulature, reading FRIDERICUS DEI GRACIA DVX SAXONIE, separated by dots. The overall design reflects the influence of the Cranach workshop's portraiture conventions prevalent at the Ernestinian court.
