Obverse description Six circular medallions, each bearing a draped bust facing either left or right, are arranged around a central medallion depicting a bust facing right, all within a decorative arrangement symbolic of the ruling ducal house. The busts represent members of the Ernestine line of the House of Wettin. A Latin legend encircles the composition along the outer rim.

Reverse description A large, elaborately quartered coat of arms of the Duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg occupies the central field, surmounted by six ornate crested helmets with mantling, each bearing a distinct heraldic crest. The date 1688 is divided at the lower left and right of the arms, with the mintmaster's initials IGW also present. A Latin titular legend of the ruling duke encircles the design along the outer rim, reading continuously around the coin.
