Frederick Charles Joseph von Erthal was the last Archbishop-Elector of Mainz to actually govern from the city. French Revolutionary forces occupied Mainz in October 1792, were briefly expelled, then retook it permanently in October 1795 — the very year this thaler was struck. Erthal died in February 1802, long after his temporal authority had effectively collapsed, having spent his final years as an elector without an electorate.
The Archbishopric itself was formally dissolved by the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803, ending over a millennium of ecclesiastical rule over the city.
