Franz Anton von Harrach served as Archbishop of Salzburg from 1709 to 1727, but this thaler dates to the very opening years of his tenure — struck while the War of the Spanish Succession was draining silver supplies and disrupting trade routes across the Holy Roman Empire. Salzburg's mint maintained production through this period largely because the archbishopric controlled its own mines in the Hohe Tauern range, insulating it from the coin shortages afflicting secular neighbors.
Zöttl distinguishes two die pairings across 2401–2402, with minor variation in the arrangement of the archiepiscopal arms.
