Reverse description Elaborate composite coat of arms featuring the Styrian shield (a silver bend on a green field) prominently at center, surrounded by the collar and pendant badge of the Order of the Golden Fleece. The crowned escutcheon is surmounted by an archducal crown which divides the date on either side. The quartered arms incorporate the heraldic emblems of the Habsburg dynastic territories. The Latin legend encircles the entire device along the rim.

Additional information

Ferdinand II ruled Styria as archduke before his election as Holy Roman Emperor in 1619, and the Graz mint operated under his direct authority during this period. The 1614 date places this thaler squarely within the years Ferdinand was consolidating Catholic rule across Inner Austria — a campaign that had already expelled Protestant preachers from Graz in 1598 and was systematically dismantling the Protestant nobility's privileges. These thalers funded an administration as much religious as fiscal.

Herinek 53 distinguishes this emission within what is a crowded field of Ferdinand II Graz thalers; collectors working this series without a copy of Herinek's catalog are essentially navigating blind.
