Obverse description The city arms of Augsburg displayed within an ornate oval baroque cartouche, flanked by the date expressed in Roman numerals split to either side of the shield. A horseshoe device appears below the arms, a characteristic civic emblem of Augsburg. The surrounding legend is disposed along the left and right sides of the coin field in Latin script. The overall design reflects the elaborate baroque engraving style prevalent in early seventeenth-century German municipal coinage.
