| Obverse description | Right-facing bust of Duke Ernest I of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, rendered in high relief in a vigorous Baroque style. The duke is portrayed as an elderly bearded figure with long flowing hair, wearing elaborately engraved armour with a richly decorated gorget and pauldron visible at the shoulder. The bust is large and dominant, occupying most of the coin's field. The Latin legend curves around the upper and lower periphery, reading from left to right, separated by a beaded inner border from the milled edge. |
