Obverse description Central field displays the quartered coat of arms of Brunswick-Lüneburg within an ornate wreath, surmounted by a crested helm bearing a lion passant as a crest. The date 73 (for 1573) appears prominently above the shield. The circumferential legend in Latin reads ERIC. D. G. DVX. BRVN. E. LVNE. EX. DVRIS. GLORIA, attributing the arms to Erich, by the grace of God Duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg, with the motto 'glory from hardship.' The entire design is enclosed within a beaded inner border, consistent with the hammered coinage style of the period.
