| Obverse description | Central device comprises a large quartered shield bearing the Brunswick and Lüneburg arms — lions passant in the upper and lower quarters — surmounted by a crested helm with flowing mantling. The date appears divided across the field to either side of the helm. A beaded inner circle separates the central device from the peripheral legend, which reads ERICVS. D. G. DVX. BRVN. ET. LVNEBVRG EX. DVRIS GLORIA. 7Z, denoting Erich III by the Grace of God Duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg, with the motto 'Glory from hardship.' The legends are rendered in bold Renaissance lettering characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century German thalers. |
