| Obverse description | Central field depicts a standing armored figure of one of the three co-ruling counts of East Frisia, shown in full plate armor and holding a sword or scepter, positioned above a displayed eagle — the heraldic emblem of East Frisia. The figure is rendered in high relief in the late Renaissance hammered style typical of mid-sixteenth-century German thalers. A beaded inner circle frames the central design, with the circumferential Latin legend reading EDZ * CHR * IOH * CO * E * DO * PHRI * ORIE, abbreviating the names and titles of the three joint rulers Edzard II, Christoph, and John, Counts of East Frisia and Lords of Phrysia Orientalis. |
