Additional information

Ragusa — modern Dubrovnik — maintained its independence for centuries through careful diplomacy and strategic tribute payments, playing Ottoman and Habsburg powers against each other with remarkable consistency. The Thaler Bradan, whose name derives from the bearded figure in its design, was the republic's principal large silver denomination during the eighteenth century, struck to broadly match the weight standards of contemporary central European thalers to facilitate the Adriatic trade on which Ragusa's economy depended.

The republic was formally dissolved by Napoleonic decree in 1808, making all Ragusan coinage a finite series with no continuation.
