Marie Hedwig of Hesse-Darmstadt died in 1680 at age nineteen, just two years into her marriage to Duke Bernhard I of Saxe-Meiningen. Memorial thalers of this type were a well-established dynastic convention in the German states — a formal assertion of lineage and grief issued for political as much as personal reasons. Bernhard would outlive three wives in total.
