Bernard II of Henneberg-Ilmenau died in 1374, making any coinage struck in his name three centuries later a memorial issue — a practice not uncommon among small German territories asserting dynastic legitimacy through posthumous commemoratives. By 1697, the county itself was politically marginal, its independence increasingly nominal within the Holy Roman Empire's consolidating power structures.
