Additional information

Albert VII ruled Mecklenburg jointly with his brother Henry V until Henry's death in 1552, but these thalers were struck during a period of acute dynastic tension, when the brothers were actively disputing territorial administration following their father's death in 1503. The Mecklenburg mint at this period was operating under considerable pressure to produce large silver coinage competitive with the proliferating thaler issues of neighboring Saxon territories.

Kunkel's classification of this type as 41 A/b indicates a specific obverse die pairing — the distinction matters for collectors since several Mecklenburg thaler varieties of this decade share reverse dies across different obverse states.
