Obverse description Central field displays the crowned arms of Göttingen within an ornate baroque cartouche: the shield bears a fortified city gate flanked by towers in the upper half and a lion passant in the lower half, with elaborate foliate scrollwork and oak-leaf branches extending to either side. Above the shield, the date 1659 is displayed flanking a crowned ornamental device, with mintmaster initials P-L placed to either side of the lower shield. The circular Latin legend is divided by a small crowned ornament at the top, reading MONETA NOVA GOTTINGENSIS, contained within a toothed or rope border running along the coin's rim.
