Obverse description Central field dominated by the rampant griffin of Rostock, depicted in high relief facing left with wings displayed and tongue extended, rendered in the vigorous late-baroque style characteristic of mid-17th-century German municipal coinage. The griffin stands atop a rocky or grassy ground line, its claws and tail elaborately detailed. A circular beaded inner border separates the central device from the surrounding peripheral legend. The circumferential Latin legend reads MONETA NOVA ROSTOCHIENSIS with the mint date, beginning at the top of the coin and running clockwise.
