Obverse description Central field displays the Frankfurt civic eagle — a single-headed crowned eagle with spread wings — superimposed upon a large cross pattée with splayed arms. The eagle is rendered in high relief with elaborate baroque scrollwork at the base of the cross. The entire design is enclosed within a plain inner circle, with the Latin civic legend encircling the periphery between two raised borders, the outermost of which is finely reeded.
