Obverse description Central field features the Hamburg city arms: a highly detailed depiction of the city gate with three fortified towers rising above a portcullis and arched gateway, all rendered in fine relief in the late Renaissance style. The gate is flanked by additional turrets and architectural ornamentation characteristic of Hamburg's civic iconography. A beaded inner border separates the central device from the circumferential legend. The surrounding legend reads MONE. NOVA. CIVITATIS. HAMBVRG, identifying this as a new coin of the City of Hamburg, and is presented in upright Roman lettering between two concentric borders.

Reverse description Central field displays the Imperial double-headed eagle of the Holy Roman Empire, shown with wings spread and heads facing outward, each surmounted by a separate crown beneath a central Imperial crown, rendered in bold hammered relief. On the breast of the eagle is a small orb or shield, and the overall design reflects the standard Imperial type of the reign of Rudolf II. The date appears in the field to the left of the eagle. The circumferential legend reads RUDOLPHUS II D G ROM IMP SEMP AUG, identifying Rudolf II as Emperor of the Romans, Ever Augustus, in Roman lettering between beaded borders.
