Additional information

Mühlhausen was one of the few Free Imperial Cities in Thuringia that retained the right to strike large silver coinage, a privilege fiercely defended against encroachment by surrounding territorial princes. By 1574, the city's minting output was modest — this thaler belongs to a small series documented by Davenport, with surviving examples scarce enough that die marriages across the series remain incompletely catalogued.
