| Obverse description | The crowned royal arms of Mary as Queen of Scots occupy the central field, surmounted by a low-arched, wide crown of characteristically Scottish form. The initial letter 'M' appears to the left of the shield and 'R' to the right, with the letter 'A' positioned beneath the 'R', together forming the abbreviated royal monogram 'MAR[ia]'. The peripheral legend, rendered in Gothic script, encircles the arms and incorporates the date 1558. The overall die work reflects the mid-sixteenth-century Scottish hammered coinage tradition. |
