| Obverse description | The royal arms of Mary as Queen of Scots occupy the central field, surmounted by a low-arched, wide crown of characteristic Scottish style. The initial letter 'M' appears to the left of the shield and 'R' to the right, each accompanied by an annulet below. The legend is disposed around the periphery in Latin, with pellet stops separating the words. The overall style is consistent with mid-sixteenth-century Scottish hammered coinage, with the shield rendered in a bold, simplified heraldic manner. |
