Obverse description Central large crowned Gothic letter 'M' dominates the field, flanked on either side by a crowned thistle in relief. The royal cipher is rendered in a bold, decorative style characteristic of mid-16th century Scottish hammered coinage. A beaded inner circle frames the central devices. The circular legend runs along the outer periphery, with the date 1555 incorporated into the inscription.

Reverse description A crowned shield bearing the quartered royal arms of Scotland as Queen Regnant, positioned at the centre of a cross potent whose limbs extend to the inner circle. The shield displays the heraldic lion rampant of Scotland in the quarters. The design is executed in the characteristic style of mid-16th century Scottish hammered silver, with the legend carrying the pious motto of the queen distributed around the periphery between lozenge stops.
