Obverse description Draped bust of Pope Urban VIII facing right, wearing the papal cope richly decorated with ecclesiastical ornament and the camauro cap, with a short beard visible. The date 1642 appears in the lower field beneath the truncation. A circular beaded border frames the design, with the Latin legend distributed around the periphery reading VRB·VIII·PONT·MAX·A·XX, denoting Urban VIII as Supreme Pontiff in his twentieth regnal year. The portrait is rendered in the refined Baroque style characteristic of the engraver Gaspare Mola, with strong relief and detailed drapery.

Reverse description The Virgin Mary stands facing, depicted as the Immaculate Conception within a large radiant mandorla composed of elongated rays emanating from her figure, with six-pointed stars scattered in the surrounding field. She is draped in flowing robes and stands upon clouds or a crescent, her hands folded or slightly extended in a devotional posture. A beaded inner border separates the central device from the outer legend SVB TVVM PRAESID ROMA, meaning 'Under your protection, Rome,' distributed around the periphery. A small papal arms or mint mark appears at the base of the reverse in the exergual area. The composition reflects the intense Marian devotion of the Urban VIII pontificate and the accomplished Baroque engraving of Gaspare Mola.
