| Obverse description | Central field displays the papal arms of Sixtus V — a shield bearing a rampant lion — surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter, all rendered in high relief characteristic of late sixteenth-century Roman hammered coinage. The shield is flanked by elaborate foliate and cloud-like mantling. The circular legend reads SIXTVS٠V٠PON٠MAX٠, separated by pellets, and is contained within a rope-beaded inner border that runs the full circumference of the flan. |
