| Obverse description | Central field bears the papal arms of Pius IV — an oval shield charged with the Medici balls (palle), surmounted by the papal tiara and the crossed keys of Saint Peter, all rendered in bold relief. Two decorative floral or foliate ornaments flank the shield on either side. The circular legend reads PIVS·IIII· to the right and ·PONT·MAX· to the left, separated by pellets, struck in Roman capitals within a rope or beaded border. |
