Obverse description Central field displays the papal coat of arms of Pope Paul IV, consisting of a horizontally striped oval shield surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter. The arms are rendered in a characteristic mid-16th-century Italian hammered style with fine detail in the striation of the shield. A beaded inner border frames the design, with the circular legend distributed around the periphery of the coin. The inscription reads PAVLVS IIII to the right and PONT MAX to the left, identifying the pontiff and his title.
