| Reverse description | The reverse presents a five-line Latin inscription — MELIVS / EST DARE / QVAM / ACCIPERE / 1685 — enclosed within an elaborate Baroque cartouche with ornate scrollwork and foliate flourishes at the top and bottom. The cartouche fills most of the field, its curvilinear acanthus-scroll borders rendered in high relief in the characteristic Roman Baroque engraving style of the period. The date 1685 appears at the foot of the inscription within the cartouche. The motto, drawn from Acts 20:35, reflects the charitable piety for which Innocent XI was renowned. The entire design is surrounded by a finely milled border. |
